What is Resin Transfer Molding?
Resin Transfer Molding process: resin injected into a closed mold with a fiber preform

Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) is a closed manufacturing process for fiber-reinforced plastics, in which dry fiber preforms are infiltrated with resin in a two- or multi-part mold. The separation of fiber preform and resin infusion allows for precise process control over material usage, fiber volume content, and component quality. After inserting the dry fibers, the low-viscosity resin system is injected into the closed cavity, completely saturating the fiber structure and curing under defined conditions. This establishes Resin Transfer Molding as a preferred technology for high-quality, reproducible composite components with excellent surface quality.

How the RTM Process Works

The Resin Transfer Molding process begins with positioning the dry fiber preform in the mold. After closing the cavity, resin injection takes place via defined inlet points, while venting channels ensure uniform flow without air entrapment. The vacuum within the cavity supports complete infiltration and minimizes porosity.

At BIONTEC, RTM is preferably combined with Tailored Fiber Placement. Load-path-optimized TFP preforms are placed into RTM molds and consolidated into highly load-bearing composite structures through controlled resin infusion.

Our Process steps:
01

Preform Positioning

Precise placement of the dry fiber preform into the mold

02

Mold Closing

Creation of the defined cavity geometry

03

Vacuum Generation

Removal of air from the fiber structure

04

Resin Injection

Controlled resin infiltration under defined pressure

05

Curing

Temperature-controlled crosslinking of the matrix system

06

Demolding

Removal of the consolidated component
