Fiber-reinforced plastics form the foundation of BIONTEC's work. For years, we have been developing and manufacturing composite components where fibers and matrix systems are specifically combined to create lightweight, high-performance, and durable structures. Our focus is on intelligently combining the specific advantages of different materials and precisely tailoring them to our customers' requirements.

What are Fiber Reinforced Plastics?

Fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) are composite materials made of fibers and a polymer matrix. The fibers carry the mechanical loads, while the resin provides shape, protection, and load transfer. Through the targeted selection and combination of fibers and matrix systems, the material properties can be precisely engineered.

Matrix Systems and Their Targeted Selection

The choice of matrix system significantly influences temperature resistance, chemical resistance, lifespan, and processability. Depending on the application area, we use thermoset or thermoplastic matrix systems. We precisely tailor the matrix selection to the final application to ensure optimal performance and cost-effectiveness.

Fiber Orientation & Fiber Volume Fraction

Faserorientierung und Fasergehalt als Gestaltungsparameter

Fiber-reinforced plastics are anisotropic, meaning their mechanical properties are direction-dependent. This is precisely a key advantage of this class of materials: strength and stiffness can be precisely influenced by the fiber orientation and fiber volume fraction.

With a load-path-optimized fiber architecture, the material is used precisely where forces occur, while weight is saved in less stressed areas. In combination with precise manufacturing technologies like Tailored Fiber Placement, highly efficient, lightweight, and load-optimized structures can be realized, which are hardly achievable with isotropic materials like metals.

Factors influencing component properties:

Fiber Orientation

Determines the direction of maximum strength and stiffness

Fiber Volume Fraction

Influences overall stiffness and component weight

Layup

Enables tailored mechanical properties for specific load cases
