Damping

Composites offer two decisive advantages for parts that are subject to vibration. The material dampens vibrations naturally due to its composition. In addition, the natural frequency of parts can be influenced by the choice of fibres and how they are oriented, thus shifting it away from the critical range.

  • Comparison of the damping effect of a CFRP beam and a steel beam: Damping factor up to 10 times higher than steel
  • Reduces vibrations and wear
  • Massive reduction in noise

Natural frequency simulation

  • Alongside damping, the natural frequency and normal mode also play an important role in many dynamic applications
  • Due to the high stiffness of the fibres – and their low weight – it is possible to shift the natural frequency out of the working range of the system or increase the speed
